Date: 5/28/2024
Subject: Folks on Spokes May, 2024
From: Huntington Bicycle Club

Message from the President
Important reminders about the next few weeks.
Commencing June 1st, all weekend rides (from Smith Street or remotely) will depart at 8:00 AM.
This will continue through September.
Remaining at 8:30 AM departure are the Crankin' rides (Monday, Thursday and Saturday) and weekday Breezy rides. When in doubt, refer to the ride postings on the website.
The June 4th meeting will have a tire changing contest! After Bob reviews the entire process of changing and refitting a tubed tire, there will be a contest for the fastest changer! There will be one wheel with a tire and an inner tube (sorry Marvin). People will be timed taking the tire and tube off, replacing them with a new inner tube and pumping it up. (PSI-90)
$$ and bragging rights for the winner!
If you have signed up for the Tour de Cure, June 8th, please register on the HBC meet-up for the TDC on the website. This way we know who's participating. Hopefully the new Club Jerseys will be available for us to wear for this event.
June 9th is when the price increases for Gold Coast East registration.
Members will pay $60 and non-members $90. There are still spots open for volunteers, so please sign up to help.
Below is an article from the LAB (League of American Bicyclists) They are inviting cyclists to record their rides with the "Love to Ride" app, similar to Strava, but a way for LAB to track people's destinations and bike usage as an advocacy measurement. LAB's monthly newsletter is automatically downloaded onto our Website every month. I urge everybody to read these.
Great to see lots of rides going out!
See you on the road,
Karen

From LAB, The League of American Bicyclists:
Make Every Ride Count in 2024

This Bike Month, let's make every ride count! How? Simply log each ride with the Love to Ride app. #MakeEveryRideCount

This new app has the power to make biking better for everyone by generating anonymous data that helps planners make infrastructure decisions based on real-time, crowdsourced information.

Throughout May, riders everywhere are encouraged and supported to ride bikes. Here’s everything you need to know:

  • Everyone is invited – from regular riders to those who haven’t touched a bike in years (or ever!).
  • Rate your routes by ‘painting’ with your finger to share how comfortable you felt on each part of your ride! Every logged ride contributes to anonymous data that helps planners make informed decisions for better biking infrastructure.
  • Ride anywhere, any time! Whether it’s to work, to the store, or a spin around the park, every ride paints a picture of what biking is like in your community.
  • Enter to win prizes every month by logging your rides with the app.
  • The #MakeEveryRideCount initiative marks the official launch of Love to Ride’s game-changing app. Or should we say ride-changing? The app not only helps to make biking better, but also makes your biking experience easier and more fun!

What if you’re new to riding?

Whether you pedal daily or haven't ridden a bike in years, Love to Ride’s got you! As behavior change experts, they help people globally embrace biking. Their website has invaluable resources designed to boost your biking confidence, from insightful tips and articles to convenient quick courses.

Bike Month celebrates the countless benefits of biking, including:

⚡️ Supercharged physical health – a simple 10-minute ride boosts your immune system, improves cardiovascular health, and increases longevity.

🧠 Improved mental health – biking fosters mindfulness, triggers the release of endorphins, and reduces the root causes of depression.

🧡 Decreased stress and anxiety – biking calms the mind, improves self-confidence, and elevates your mood.

🌍 Protecting the planet – reduce your carbon footprint by leaving the car at home!

💰 Saving money – reduce transportation expenses and car maintenance costs.

Boost your energy, protect the planet, increase your happiness, and influence infrastructure this Bike Month!  #MakeEveryRideCount
