A Message From the President
Now that Gold Coast East 2024 is a memory, time for our Club to congratulate ourselves!
The success of the event was due to the team effort that was exerted.
Every volunteer position was important and had an impact on the day's positive outcome.
Pre-event volunteers: Logo designer, Route planner, road markers, equipment movers, tent assemblers, goody bag assemblers.
Day-of volunteers: rest stop workers, registration, SAG support, Road Marshalls, ride leaders, clean up crew.
Everybody's contribution mattered and had an impact on whether things ran smoothly.
And, it didn't hurt that there was no rain, but just a little (lol) heat!
Looking ahead, the next Club meeting will be Thursday, August 8th at 7PM in the Harborfields Library.
Pictures from the Gold Coast and the volunteers' party will be streamed as well as a "post mortem" discussion about the event.
October is looking like a potentially busy cycling month.
The New York Bike Coalition is running 2 events in October.
See below for a description of what the Coalition is about and why the HBC is a proud sponsor.
Speaking of Sponsors, without the many sponsors of the Gold Coast East, much of the event would not have been possible. Brands and Trek are featured below, and their $ contributions and mechanical support were invaluable for the Gold Coast. Please patronize all of our sponsors!
Larry is organizing a remote ride in Saratoga the weekend of October 4th. See below for details.Hopefully, we'll have the new Club Jerseys to wear! If you wish to order the Club Jersey through the maker, Primal, do so online. The price is $70 and as soon as we get 10 orders another batch can made.
Take a moment and read an update from the Safe Streets Coalition and see the most recent accident statistics involving cars, cyclists and pedestrians. Think of this when you vote in November.
The Cow Harbor race still needs volunteers. See below.
See you all on the road, and sign up for the meeting so we know how much pizza to get!
Karen

New York Bicycling Coalition advocates for pro-bicycle and pro-pedestrian policies and funding at all levels of government; educates New Yorkers about bicycle safety and the benefits of bicycling; provides technical assistance and support to advocates and government entities; and promotes bicycle tourism across the state.

NYBC is the only advocacy organization dedicated to cyclists.
The two events that are being organized are:
Cycle New York , on October 13th starting at Sunken Meadow Park.

Sunday, October 13, 2024 for the 9th annual CycleNY Long Island Ride to benefit the NY Bicycling Coalition (NYBC.net)
The ride will begin at the spectacular Sunken Meadow State Park, with 25 mile and 50 mile route options. Both routes will be special and will take you through some of the area's most beautiful and best riding roads.

The longer route option will include more challenging hills.

        An update from the

Safe Streets, NY-Coalition for Transportation

    Traffic fatalities surge across NY

Here's a county by county breakdown

New York State Team-Thomas C. Zambito

New York tallied 1,175 traffic fatalities in 2022, the highest total in a decade, with Long Island’s 245 far surpassing all other parts of the state, according to a state comptroller’s report.

State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli analyzed state and federal traffic statistics to document what experts say has been an increase in dangerous driving since the start of the pandemic.

New York’s nearly 26% surge in fatalities between 2019 and 2022 — which includes deaths among vehicle drivers/passengers, motorcyclists, bikers and pedestrians — exceeds a 17% increase across the nation. That’s despite a 12.5% decline in all New York traffic accidents during the same years and decreases in vehicle miles traveled.

“Traffic fatalities in New York have grown at an alarming rate since the pandemic,” DiNapoli said. “While there are fewer drivers on the road and vehicle safety features have greatly improved, more fatal crashes are occurring. As New Yorkers hit the road for the Fourth of July holiday and summer vacations, let’s drive cautiously and arrive safely.”

To look at the report, go here.

Where do most crash deaths occur in NY?

The upstate region’s highest totals were in Erie County (59 in 2022), Monroe County (45) and Orange County (39.)

Downstate counties saw fewer fatal accidents — including Westchester (36), Dutchess (26) and Rockland (20).

Most fatalities took place on New York’s urban roadways, an increase of nearly 70% since 2017. While Long Island’s two-county total of 245 fatalities led the state, the North Country region had the highest per capita rate at nearly 13 deaths for every 100,000 people.

Manhattan, with a population of nearly 9 million, had the lowest per capita rate at around 3. Manhattan’s 36 deaths equaled Westchester’s total.

Most deaths took place on expressways and freeways with higher speed limits than local roads.

Drinking:Drunken driving deaths surging in NY. Should state lower limit for drunken driving to .05?

What types of deaths are tracked?

The report says 64% of those killed were either not wearing a seatbelt or, in the case of motorcyclists, a helmet.

The majority of those killed were vehicle occupants (809) followed by pedestrians (303) and bicyclists (50).

Passengers and light trucks were involved in three quarters of the deaths followed by large truck and buses (10%) and motorcycles (12%).

Speeding accounted for one of every three deaths (402), while another third (371) was attributed to drunk driving. Between 2019 and 2022, fatalities involving drivers over the legal limit of .08 has increased 45%.

Crackdown:NY's DMV wants tougher penalties for high-risk drivers. What new rules are they proposing?

Where does New York rank in fatal crashes across U.S.?

The state ranked 11th nationally in total fatalities. California (4,513), Texas (4,500) and Florida (3,530) were the top three.

New York’s fatality rate — deaths per 100,000 people — was 5.97, the third lowest among all states.

Surge:Traffic deaths surged in New York during pandemic; drivers prone to 'riskier' behavior?

Have the numbers improved since 2022?

A June study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the number of traffic fatalities has been steadily declining across the country since the spring of 2022.

In the first three months of this year, 8,650 died in traffic crashes, compared to 8,935 during the same period in 2023.

Fatalities decreased in 30 states and Puerto Rico from January to March.

New York’s estimated 225 fatalities during the time span was roughly the same as 2023, when there were 223 fatalities.

“We’re encouraged to see traffic fatalities continue to decline, but more work must be done to reduce these preventable tragedies on our roads,” NHTSA Deputy Administrator Sophie Shulman said.

Minutes of HBC Meeting 7/2/2024

President Karen Gellert called the meeting to order at 7:32 PM.

The minutes of the previous meeting were projected on screen. John Greene made a motion to accept, seconded by David Hirsch. The minutes were accepted.

Karen then presented the club treasurer’s report. Anthony Oliveri was not able to attend the meeting.

The club is in good financial standing.

Vice President Greene reported that the Gold Coast volunteer party is scheduled for Saturday, July 27 at the home of

Scott Gross with a rain date of Sunday July 28. He asked that invitees please RSVP ASAP.

The meeting recessed for Pizza which arrived at 7:35. The stomach growling was replaced with sounds of munching and pleasant conversation.

The meeting reconvened with president Gellert modelling the new Gold Coast tee shirt. The new design was well received. She then reported that the new Club Jerseys have a sizing issue. Reordering was being negotiated with the supplier. Members who have shirts on order may obtain the new models at an additional cost of $5.00. Details will follow.

Sal Levy gave the membership report. Membership is in a state of dynamic equilibrium. We lost 18 members due to attrition but gained 21 new members. Scott Gross informed the attendees that he is the chairman of retention. He will contact any members referred to him that may be leaving the club.

John Greene announced that we need ride leads for the upcoming weekend. Larry Denbaum has a B+ ride posted for Saturday that starts at Mattituck High School and goes out to Orient Point. More postings are needed.

Steve Labiner began the discussion concerning the status of the Gold Coast East tour.

Issues that were addressed included:

  • Hose donations needed to supply potable water to the rest stop jugs. New hoses are improper due to the taste they give the water. Old hoses are preferred. The heat is also a problem. Allowing a continuous slow flow of water could help resolve that issue.
  • Some volunteer positions including SAG drivers and rest stop attendants still need to be filled. Trek would help with providing a SAG vehicle. Several bike shops have volunteered to help with repairs.
  • Matt Frisch is the captain of the ride marshals. The duties of the ride marshals were reviewed.
  • Reporting times for the rest stops were reviewed. The Kings Park rest stop attendants need to report by 7: 30. Other rest stops may open later. All times of operation are available on the HBC website.
  • Karen stated that rest stop captains should email their workers with instructions
  •  Larry was thanked for preparing the GC routes. Larry gave some details on the routes. Harvey asked to have the routes resent to him. It was suggested that a survey be taken on the registrants’  use of road markings ,vis-à-vis GPS. All road marking swill be double checked for accuracy and visibility.
  •  Steve entertained questions from the attendees.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:50.

Respectfully submitted by Sal Levy, assistant secretary.
