Date: 9/27/2024
Subject: Folks on Spokes September, 2024
From: Huntington Bicycle Club

              Message From the President
This is the last weekend that rides start at 8:00 AM from Smith Street. Starting October 5, rides depart at 8:30AM.
Breezy and Crankin' Rides remain starting at 8:30AM.
If you are receiving this newsletter because you got the trial membership through the Gold Coast, you know that your membership is going to expire this week. Now is a great time to become a member and enjoy all the perks, access to our RWGPS library and activities our club has to offer.
The Club meeting on October 9th will feature a presentation from the folks at REI in Huntington.
In addition, Daniel Flanzig will be representing the New York Bike Coalition in receiving their donation from HBC.

There have been some changes for signing up for rides. Club Express has initiated some adjustments that our Webmaster, Malachy has been working on to make the process less complicated. Look below for directions for new ride sign-up procedures.

The SBRA/HBC Long Island Cares Ride, is October 19th. The procedures to sign up for this ride:
On the HBC ride site, go to the link to donate to LI Cares ($20)
Go to the SBRA ride calendar for Saturday, October 19th. Choose a route and level you would like to do. Email Gerry Widen (rides@sbraweb.org) their Ride chairman, and he'll get you registered. This is a great event, with a huge reception at the end. Bring some canned food to donate as well.

The theme for this month's Newsletter is (as you check out the pictures): New Club Jerseys and how great they look!
Our representative riders got many compliments at the Tour of the Hamptons this past weekend.
A new order is going into Primal this week, so if you are interested in purchasing one (for Thanksgiving, Chanukah, Kwanza or Christmas!) this is a great time. Right now we are going to purchase some jerseys to have in stock. Please go to the store and order. If you want it mailed to you, it's an extra fee. Easier to meet me at Smith Street and get it there!

Attention Ride Leaders: The Ride Report Icon will no longer appear on the ride until the day after the ride. Ride leaders will have to use the Main Menu for a same day report. If they wait until a day or more after the ride, the icon will be on the ride. The ride info is now at the bottom of the page.
Another change: the Crankin' rides no longer have Guests.

Club Party!
The great event of 2024! Outstanding food, drink, prizes and awards!
The invitation is below. Register before the price increase.

Last item, the Classifieds. Please start using the Classified Ads either by posting Bicycle related items up on it, or using it to purchase items. It is very easy to both purchase and post. As a member in good standing, if you want to put something up for sale, go to your profile and click on the Classified ads on the bottom right of the profile page. Non-members can purchase items from our Classified Ads page as well, all they have to do is go to the main Menu and click on the Classified Ads.
Below is a link to the HBC safe riding presentation being given at the Northport Public Library, Laurel Rd, on October 7th at 6:30 PM. Please share with people who may be casual riders and might want to learn about strategies riding in and around Huntington. NY State bike laws and how these affect children will be covered.

Looking ahead to next week,
L'Shanah Tovah to all who observe Rosh Hashanah.
Be well and see you on the road,
Karen
Sending best wishes to Bob from Roslyn

Minutes of the General Meeting

od the HBC

9/3/2024

President-Karen Gellert called the meeting to order at 7:32 PM.

The minutes of the previous meeting were projected on screen. Scott Gross made a motion to accept, seconded by Jeff Erlitz. The minutes were accepted.

Karen gave an update on Larry Denbaum’s progress pursuant to his accident. She stated that the surgery on his elbow was successful. She also stated that Larry was advised that there is no legal recourse due to the absence of any laws governing speed bump warnings.

Karen also displayed Howie Nussdorf’s thank you note for the gift sent to him in thanks for the use of his warehouse facility.

Treasurer-Anthony Oliveri gave an update on the club finances. There were no radical changes since the last update.

The president then proceeded to inform the attendees of two changes proposed by the Board to the club bylaws. The first is a delineation of the definitions of individual and family club membership. The second is the creation of a club code of conduct for all members. There was a brief discussion on the specifics of each change. The changes are to be presented to the membership attending the next club meeting for approval.

Gold Coast-Steve Labiner  presented John and Melissa, of Kids Need More with a donation check of the $6500 raised by our Gold Coast East event. John gave the members an explanation of the purpose of the charity and of some of their events. The charity helps over 1500 children and is aided by thousands of volunteers throughout the year.

Kids Need More  provided us with help at the Gold Coast East registration site, setting up tents and helping to serve the attendees. They promised to do as much and more next year.

VP-John Greene announced the date of the club fall party on November 2. There is a limit of 60 guests with an initial fee of $45.00 per person and $55.00 starting 10/22. John also spoke of the Cow Harbor 10K race that is scheduled for 9/21. Volunteers are still needed to help with the event.

Featured Speaker-Doug Haluza gave a presentation of his recent bike trips all over the US and Europe.

Yishai Shapir gave the members an update on the latest Garmin cycling electronics.

John Greene gave a brief update on Bob McLaughlin’s progress in healing from his recent accident. Don Natiello aided in the discussion.

The 50/50 was chosen by John, from Kids Need More. Kim Schultze’s ticket was presented as the winner by Terry Causin.

The meeting was ended at 8:50.

Respectfully submitted by Sal Levy,

Assistant Secretary.
