From: Huntington Bicycle Club

              Message From the President
                        Happy New Year to all!
December 1 began the new ride year for tallying Ride Leader points.
The Board has approved reverting back to the original points necessary for a gift card/Ride Leader Jersey:
As of December 1st,  8 points are needed to earn a gift card or a jersey. The time frame to earn the points is until November 30, 2025. Remember, rides are posted year round, so please join in when you feel the weather is comfortable enough for you to ride.

An incident occurred recently on a ride, where the leader was making a right turn and someone who had gone ahead of him thought to go left, and they hit each other. Don't worry, neither was injured and the bikes were ok as well. The important issue is that when in a group, you must always stay behind the leader. This incident happened because a rider was in front of the leader at the turn. So, please take note here!
Speaking of ride leaders, the annual Ride Leader Meeting will be in the first week of March.
John Greene is back as Ride Chairman.
  •   Save the date: July 13, 2025 Gold Coast East
Monthly Club meetings resume in March, in addition to the annual Ride Leader Meeting.
Dates will be posted on the Website and shared through email reminders.
Folks on Spokes will continue to be published through the winter.

Donations of $150 were given from the Club in memory of George Fabian to St Jude hospital research and in memory of Bruce Feinberg to the American Cancer Society.

Below are some interesting articles covering the year's clubs ride statistics, an alert about bike racks. an appeal to contribute to the LAB and a list of all the donors for the HBC Autumn Party.

Have a great holiday season, and I hope to see many of you at one of our starting points for rides in the coming months.

Fred Itkin, of the Massapequa Club sent this:
"Yesterday on the Throgs Neck Bridge, I received a summons claiming my hitch bike rack was blocking the rear license plate.  The TBTA officer told me to remove it when not carrying bike(s) even though bikes would more partially block the plate. The bike rack weighs 63 pounds and has been attached to my Honda CRV since October 2016.
I have contacted bike lawyer Daniel Flanzig to see if I have any recourse other than simply paying the fine.
I suggest a warning be sent to members."

Why are they doing this? The answer is that if your license plate is covered, it can't be scanned for the purpose of billing for the toll. He sent a link for gizmos to put the license plate in front of the carrier.
Bottom line: make sure that if you have a bike carrier, that your license plate is visible at all times.
A message from the League of American Bicyclists (LAB)

Riding a bicycle is very much a local endeavor: neighborhood streets, personal destinations, regional events. But so much of what makes our everyday riding experiences possible takes place ‘behind the scenes,’ from policies and decisions made in Washington.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s important to act locally and support local change-makers, and also critical for better biking in our cities and towns are the policy experts working to fight back against a car culture that undermines our safety and way-of-life.

We’re the voice for bicyclists in Washington.

Will you stand with us at this uncertain political moment and support our work with a contribution today?

Your support will pay dividends in building the framework for a Bicycle Friendly America for generations to come.

Make Your Gift to the League Now!

Thanks to the support of riders like you, our policy team is celebrating a monumental 2024:
  • Slow Roads Save Lives: Our campaign for sensible, safer speed limits and roadway designs has expanded to new audiences, including state departments of transportation. We’re tracking and championing speed limit reform from New York City to several California cities and beyond, including the new Safe Streets and Roads for All grant program.
  • Safer Vehicles: The League continues to lead the movement for safer motor vehicle design and technology and while the consumer and commercial interests are seemingly insurmountable, we helped secure a major win with a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration rule that will make automakers account for the safety of people biking and walking in their ‘star’ safety rating.
  • Streamlining Funding: The League has been very active in shaping U.S. Department of Transportation rulemakings following the passage of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act in 2021. Administrative proposals that will impact major funding programs and rulemakings required by Congress will set the stage for investments and improvements over the next decade.
  • Ready to Ride: We’re working with people and organizations providing and attempting to provide in-school on-bike education throughout the country. It is exciting to see the passion for educating a new generation of cyclists and impressive to see how people and organizations have made programming possible. Look for our new report soon.
HBC is a proud member of the LAB. Their monthly newsletter is published in the Social Media Folder/LAB Blog for members to view.
LAB is our club's insurance carrier and has supported and advised the Club in various situations, including safety during the Gold Coast and all Club sponsored rides.
