Date: 6/29/2025
Subject: Folks on Spokes June, 2025
From: Huntington Bicycle Club

          A Message from the President

Two weeks to go before the Gold Coast East!
That being said, now is the time for making all of the preparations for the event.
Road markings will start this week, for instance.
There are still openings for volunteers, so please avail yourselves if you can.
The Volunteer party is Saturday, July 19th at 4PM.
If you plan on attending, email John at: jrgreene1@optonline.net asap so he can plan the food order.
If you plan on riding the Gold Coast East, and haven't signed up yet, please do!
It really helps knowing how many people are riding when planning all the food purchases.
If you ordered the event jersey, the Gold Coast East Jerseys should be available to take home at the meeting on July 1st.
Look below for information about bringing donations for the Harry Chapin Food Bank at Registration.
Everybody should bring something to donate, whether if you're riding or volunteering.
The Club Meeting on July 1st will be devoted to Gold Coast concerns. I strongly recommend attending if you are receiving your Jersey or would like to be more involved in the Gold Coast operations.
Big reminder: There will be no registrations accepted the day of the event.
See you on the road and at the meeting, July 1st.
Karen

Everybody coming to Registration for the Gold Coast East, whether as a volunteer or riding, is encouraged to donate non-perishable food items in support of
Long Island Cares.

Support Long Island Cares – Bring a Can, Make a Difference!

Bring a non-perishable food item to drop in our donation bin at the start of the ride.

Your generosity will help feed families in need right here on Long Island.

Most-needed items include:

  • Canned tuna or chicken
  • Canned vegetables & beans
  • Peanut butter & jelly (plastic jars)
  • Pasta & rice
  • Cereal & oatmeal
Let’s show the power of our cycling community by filling the bin—and helping Long Island Cares continue its critical mission.

Every can counts. Every mile matters. Together, let’s ride with a purpose.

Above is the new Gold Coast Jersey. It is produced by Voler, who manufactured the Club Jersey about 10 years ago. Prices and size chart are on the Website. Go to:

ClubExpress Point of Sale (POS) Module

ClubExpress has deployed a Point of Sale (POS) module. This module currently is integrated with the Storefront, Donations and for non-members to join the Club-via Membership modules. What this means is that we now can accept cash using the POS system on a cellphone through our ClubExpress Mobile App or through the Control Panel with a laptop computer.

An example of this could be a member purchasing a club jersey at a club meeting or at the lot before a ride. Also, Gold Coast or other Donations could be collected through this process.

Currently the Membership feature is only available to non-members. So, a non-member could join the club by paying through this system. When they do so it is the same as if they joined online. They will receive all the normal emails and will be a full member immediately.

In the future, if the club purchases a Credit Card reader, we could also accept Credit Cards for payment as well. The credit card reader would connect via Bluetooth to a cellphone using

the Mobile App. A laptop computer cannot connect to the Card Reader. Hopefully members may be able to renew membership this way as well.

Nina Kuscsik, Marathoner who broke gender barriers, dies at 86 on June 16, 2025

Overcoming male resistance as a voice for equality, she was the first woman to enter the New York City Marathon and the first official female winner of the Boston Marathon. In the 1970s, she repudiated the widely-held and unfounded belief that women could not and should not run such races of 26.2 miles.

Her daughter, Chris Wiese, said Kuscsik was diagnosed with cognitive impairment in 2014 and had recently been treated for bouts of pneumonia. She died in the hospital.

A superb all-around athlete and a New York state champion as a cyclist, speedskater and roller skater, Kuscsik took up distance running in 1967 to keep fit when her bicycle needed repair.(!!!) She ran more than 80 marathons while raising three children for part of that time as a single mother, concurrently working as a patient representative at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Manhattan.

Nina was an HBC member and rode with the Club as recently as 3 years ago. She was a featured speaker at a Club meeting to commemorate the 50th anniversary of her running the NYC Marathon.

               Arrangements for Nina:

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at Union United Methodist
Church, 1018 Pulaski Road, East Northport, NY.

  • Visitation and viewing: 10:00 – 11:00 a.m.
  • Service: 11:00 a.m.

Immediately following the service, a Celebration of Nina’s Life will take place from
12:30 to 4:00 p.m. at the Huntington Moose Lodge, 631 Pulaski Rd, Greenlawn, NY,
a cherished place where Nina enjoyed dancing every Tuesday night. Food and drinks
will be provided, and guests are warmly encouraged to attend, connect, celebrate
Nina’s vibrant life, and share a favorite memory or story of Nina. We will have a few
prepared tributes to share, and we welcome any others that would like to speak at
her celebration.

Please RSVP for the Celebration of Life, so that we may get an idea of how many seats
and the amount of food that we will need. RSVP to: https://ninak.rsvpify.com

Burial
Interment will take place on Monday, July 14, at 10:30 a.m., at Nassau Knoll
Cemetery, 500 Port Washington Blvd., Port Washington, NY. An optional funeral
procession will depart from Jacobsen’s Funeral Home, 1380 New York Ave.,
Huntington Station, at 9:30 a.m. For those attending the interment, you are welcome to
join the processional or meet at the cemetery.

In Loving Memory
In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations in Nina’s memory be made to one of the
following:
The Alzheimer's Association: https://www.alz.org
The NY Road Runners: https://www.nyrr.org
The Arbor Day Foundation:

https://www.arborday.org/donate
Your support of these causes would continue Nina’s legacy of resilience, compassion,
and advocacy for others.

HBC Club Meeting Minutes 6/3/2025

President Gellert called the meeting to order at 7:31 PM. She stated that we had a long agenda.

New members Marti and Bernadette were introduced. President Gellert explained the club ride levels and web calendar of rides.

Karen then announced that the State Legislature has enacted a law that calls for the issue of a criminal summons to any cyclist that commits a traffic infraction within the limits of New York City. She asked that the attendees communicate our objection to this statute by contacting: Senator Krueger, 518-455-2297, Senator Cousins, 518-455-2585, or Assemblyman Heastie, 518-455-3791.

Dr. Scott Gross made a motion to accept the minutes of the May club meeting, seconded by Steve Labiner. The minutes were tacitly approved.

The president then displayed the new Gold Coast East jerseys being sold.

Pictures of our group attending the Tour De Cure ride last Saturday were displayed. The group included President Karen Gellert, VP John Greene, Craig, Winkler, Chris Winkler, Brandon Winkler, Andrew Pfau, and Steve Klein. Steve Labiner noted that there were no supplies or tools provided to the SAG wagons of the tour.

President Gellert did a memorial presentation for Richard Lubasch who passed away last month. She showed several photos of Rich on club rides and of Rich and his wife Lois. She stated a few of the many selfless and valuable contributions Rich made to the club during his membership. She also relayed the wonderful story of Rich and Lois’s meeting.

Karen then informed the assemblage of the creation of a bench at Bethany Church to stand as a memorial to our recently departed member, George Fabian. Our thanks to Artie Causin for his hard work in having the bench built and erected. Pictures of the dedication and the bench will be forthcoming.

John Greene gave the VP/Ride Chairman’s report. He reiterated the requirement of 8 ride leads to earn a ride leader jersey.

Sal Levy gave a short presentation of the membership status. There are still around 290 members, with 4 new members this past month.

Steve Labiner gave the Gold Coast report. There are 73 registrations at present. Prices are going up from $40 to $70 for members and $95 for non-members on June 9th .

He emphasized the need for volunteers to operate the SAG wagon, captain the road marshals and captain the road marking crew. Larry informed the room that there were no road markings on the Blooming Metric and the entire route access was through Ride With GPS.

Doug Haluza gave a picture presentation of his history of tryouts for the RAAM (Ride Across America). The dedication and endurance required were overwhelming.

50/50-$47 to Jen Haluza

The meeting was adjourned at 8:50.

Respectfully submitted,

Sal Levy
